This story begins with an ending — a death. The death was that of a very much loved woman, my godmother, my late mother’s best friend.

    My godmother was Annie Franklin Toase née Wighton, and she was one of the few people who remained staunchly loyal to me, to my mother and to all our family throughout her life. My mother died in 1975 at the relatively early age of sixty-three, my godmother Annie lived into her eighty-ninth year, but she never wavered in her loyalty. (continue)
